First 72 Hours China Medical Treatment What Happens: Guide

Sarah Lin

Sarah Lin

Senior Medical Travel Coordinator

8 years coordinating international patient care in Beijing and Shanghai.

First 72 Hours Medical Treatment What Happens: Guide

Quick answer: Your first 72 hours in China for medical treatment follow a predictable sequence: airport pickup and rest on arrival, hospital registration and specialist consultation on Day 1, diagnostic testing and results review on Day 2, and a confirmed treatment plan by Day 3. An English-speaking coordinator stays with you throughout. Results vary by individual, and any treatment plan should be decided with your doctor.

At a glance

  • China offers 240-hour visa-free transit to citizens of 55 countries through 65 designated ports, allowing stays of up to 10 days for eligible travelers (National Immigration Administration of China).
  • The China medical tourism market was valued at USD 11.3 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 22.8 billion by 2035 (Future Market Insights, 2025).
  • In 2025, key Chinese hospitals recorded 1.28 million international patient visits, a 73.6% increase from three years earlier (National Health Commission 2025 Annual Report, via Medora China).
  • Arrival day is for pickup, hotel check-in, a local SIM or data setup, and rest — not for medical appointments.
  • Day 1 includes hospital registration and a 30- to 60-minute specialist consultation; diagnostic tests often begin the same morning.
  • By Day 3, most patients have reviewed results with their doctor and have a confirmed treatment plan.

What happens in the first 24 hours after you land?

You clear immigration, collect luggage, and meet your driver in the arrivals hall. The driver has your name, flight details, and photo, and will take you directly to your pre-booked accommodation.

In your room, you usually find a local SIM card or data solution, a small amount of local currency, a printed schedule, and your coordinator's contact information. Your only job that day is to rest, hydrate, and adjust to the time zone. No medical appointments are scheduled on arrival day.

What happens on Day 1 at the hospital?

Your coordinator meets you at the hotel in the morning and walks or drives with you to the hospital. At the international patient services desk, your registration is completed in minutes because it was pre-arranged.

You then see the specialist for 30 to 60 minutes. The doctor reviews your translated records, examines you, and explains the proposed plan. After the consultation, you move through diagnostic testing — blood work, imaging, or specialty tests — often completing everything the same morning.

What happens on Days 2 and 3 to confirm your plan?

Many test results are available by the afternoon of Day 1 or the morning of Day 2. Your coordinator messages you when the doctor is ready to review them.

During the follow-up visit, the doctor walks you through each result, confirms or adjusts the treatment plan, explains the procedure and risks, and answers your questions. By Day 3, most patients have a scheduled procedure date and written pre-operative instructions.

How we help you through the first 72 hours

  • We draw on a nationwide database of hospitals, doctors, and their specialties, plus direct insight from hospital contacts about which specialists genuinely excel — so we match you to a stronger fit, not a name from an ad.
  • Our on-the-ground team is inside these hospitals regularly, so our recommendations reflect real patient feedback and recovery patterns, not just paper credentials.
  • If a hospital cannot take your case, we help arrange a transfer or admission through the right channel — you're not left stranded.
  • You get a free case review first, and records prepared so your US doctor can still use them afterward.
  • Bilingual support throughout — you don't have to navigate a foreign medical system on your own.

We give you the evidence and our reasoning. You make the final decision, with your doctor.
